So, I was able to upgrade the server. I know, I said I wouldn’t, but a deal came up that made it hard to ignore. So now I have a dual-10 core/20 thread setup in a used server chassis. It’s so roomy and nice! And it lit a fire in me to continue to expand. Must… temper… desires…
The goal now, as I see it, is to attempt to move my current gaming rig (i4790k+1080ti) into a VM on my server, and abandon the desktop entirely. The only issue I’m running in to is the distance between my “server room” and my computer desk. I have to measure it out, but I believe I’m looking at ~50′ or so of cable run. I simply don’t have ceiling access between those two (they run perpendicular to the floor joists), so I would have to attach to the ceiling and cover it with cable covers. I’m pretty sure HDMI and USB can make the span, so I’m not too worried about the technical side, just the aesthetic.
Second issue is VR reliability at those distances. I use a Pimax 5k+ running SteamVR 2.0 tracking, and the headset connects via DP 1.4 + USB. USB is fairly easy to extend, but DP 1.4 has fidelity requirements limiting it to ~5m reliably. So I will need to consider moving my VR setup (very much do not want to do this), or rigging up some active (powered) extenders, and hoping for the best. I don’t honestly know what to expect, but I’m willing to give it a shot. Looks like a fun few months ahead!
